Trish left to return to Gainesville around 11:00AM the following morning after preparing a delicious New England styled breakfast; Eggs Benedict, which consisted of hot buttered English muffins, Canadian-style bacon, and poached eggs topped by a heavenly drizzle of hollandaise sauce. As a side dish, I cooked up a serving of Texas-styled roasted potatoes for mopping up the extra egg yolk and hollandaise. Her visit was nothing short of inspirational and educational, and in a variety of ways. I counted myself fortunate to have fallen for someone so ‘there for me’. Many men and women appear to be into the love and devotion and commitment dating scene but seem to always shy away from the devotion and commitment part of it. It’s all about love of self when you really look under the surface of their true nature.

Pulling myself together, I grabbed my attaché case and headed over to the office. Once inside of the building, I headed straight for Janice’s office. She was on the phone. Seeing me, she signaled me inside. Positioned across the top of her large wooden desk were the usual office tools and devices you’d expect to find, in and out baskets, a stapler, an adding machine, a large desk calendar, a computer system, this one with two monitors, and a telephone. She also had a framed picture of her and her three elementary school-aged children and one of her and her husband Ralph.

Taking a seat in front of her throne, I waited for her to wrap up her call. Patiently I sat there looking at the certificates on the walls while drumming my fingers on the armrest of the chair. Though I was cool and calm and collective on the outside, inwardly, I felt like I was sitting on pins and needles.

“Welcome back, Marvin,” Janice said as she hung up the phone. “It’s good to see you.”

Wanting to get straight to the point of my visit, I simply asked, “Thanks Janice but is there any new developments on the missing test scores?”

“None, Marvin. None at all,” she answered painfully.

“And you could not find it on the backup flash drive I keep in my desk drawer?”

“Nope.”

“What about the backup files on the computer?”

“Nope.”

“Well, what about the deleted files? You couldn’t find them either?”

Shaking her hand left to right, she uttered, “Nope.”

“My God, Janice. I know I entered those scores. I know I did,” I stressed as I tried to sort in my head what could have gone awry. “Were you able to find the original paperwork with the scores on them?”

“That we did find.”

“That’s a relief, I said, sitting straight in the chair. “Where did you find it at?”

“Jasmine was the one who found the paperwork but I’m not sure where she found it but that’s not the point. The scores did not get recorded in time.”

“God, I don’t know what to tell you Janice,” I murmured, leaning back, my voice trailing off. “Was there a power outage that may have disrupted the system? You know that happens at times.
